About Us
Mission Statement
To provide resources for Filipino Americans in Iowa while promoting Filipino culture and traditions in the community.
Vision
Empowering Filipino Americans to Thrive.
OUR HISTORY
The Filipino American Society of Iowa was founded in 2013 by Luisita Dona McBurney, a passionate community advocate who saw a critical gap in support for Filipino Americans living in Iowa. While many Filipino immigrants are fluent in English and adapt quickly to American life, cultural differences, family dynamics, and access to services often go overlooked. Luisita created FAS to help bridge that gap—with compassion, cultural pride, and community connection.

What began as a grassroots effort to provide essential services—like translation, transportation, and relocation support—has grown into the premier Filipino American organization in Iowa. Today, we serve individuals and families across the state, helping newcomers adjust, thrive, and feel at home while proudly celebrating their heritage.

In addition to direct services, we host some of the largest cultural celebrations in the region, including the annual Filipino Fiesta, which now welcomes over 3,000 attendees each year. These events serve not only to showcase Filipino culture through food, fashion, and performance—but to bring Iowans of all backgrounds together in celebration and unity.

At FAS, we believe that everyone deserves to be seen, supported, and celebrated. Our mission continues to grow, powered by the strength of our community, the dedication of our volunteers, and the generosity of our partners. Whether you’re Filipino or simply a friend of the culture, we invite you to be part of our story.
